Thanks to the arrival of the rains over the last two weeks, the sky’s orange haze has been replaced by clear blue and Amboseli’s celebrated far horizons seem to stretch even further.
This spectacle isn’t just beautiful, it’s essential. Most of the Greater Amboseli Ecosystem is semi-arid, so every raindrop is precious. With increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, each rainy season feels like a roll of the dice. We are delighted to have experienced two years of above average rainfall, but the challenges of the 2022 drought still feel fresh and something we know we’ll face again.
Right now, the prognosis is looking good, which is great news for the ecosystem’s people, wildlife, and of course, our work at Big Life. The season of abundance should mean fewer crop raids by elephants. Cases of bushmeat poaching and livestock depredation should also relax, giving us the chance to enjoy the return of The Good Times.
