At Big Life Foundation USA, we value your privacy, and we will never share your personal information or contact you without your permission. This statement explains some of the steps we take to protect your privacy, as well as some choices you can make about how your information is collected, updated, and used by us.
We have made this policy available on our homepage and at the bottom of each of our website pages, especially those on which personal information is likely to be requested, so it will be easy to find.
How Big Life Collects Information
We collect information from you when you register on our website, place an order in our e-store, make a donation, subscribe to receive our e-newsletter, fill out a form, or enter information in any other way on our website.
You may also choose to share your PII with us on paper (such as at an event or via postal mail), verbally (by phone or in person), or via social media (such as by commenting on a post in Facebook, Twitter, etc.).

*It is important to note that we NEVER store any of your payment details, such as credit card numbers, bank details, or any other financial information, in our system. This includes the information provided by our Ranger Club members who sign up for recurring monthly donations online. In fact, for all online donations, we do not at any point have access to your credit or debit card details. That information is handled exclusively by our secure payment processors. How Big Life Uses Your Information
We may use the information we collect from you in the following ways:
- to process your transactions, including donations and/or e-store purchases,
- to facilitate timely and accurate delivery of purchase receipts, items purchased in our e-store, tax receipts, and/or thank you notes,
- to notify the recipient of a donation made by you in honor of that person or for a special occasion (such as a birthday or wedding), at your request,
- to keep you informed about our work on the ground in Africa,
- to respond to your inquiries (such as answering a question you have asked us via phone or email),
- to request updated payment details (such as if we are notified by a payment processor that your credit card is about to expire or by our bank that your check was declined),
- to administer a contest, promotion, survey, or other site feature, or
- to occasionally solicit donations (we typically send two appeals per year).
You may opt out at any time if you no longer wish to be contacted (see below).
How Big Life DOES NOT USE Your Information
We do not sell, rent, trade, or share any of our supporters’ information with any outside party without your express written permission to do so, or unless compelled to do so by force of law.

You are free to prevent unwanted communications from Big Life at any time and for any reason. You may choose to receive only specific types of communication sent via certain methods, or none at all.
You may also unsubscribe, or change your subscription preferences, directly from within any e-newsletter sent to you by Big Life. The options exist at the bottom of each email.
Big Life’s Commitment to Data Security
We take your privacy very seriously. To safeguard and secure the information we collect, prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the correct uses of information, we adhere at all times to appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures designed to protect your information.
We do not use vulnerability scanning and/or scanning to PCI standards. An external PCI-compliant payment gateway handles all credit card transactions. We use regular Malware Scanning.
Your personal information is contained behind secured networks and is only accessible by a limited number of persons who have special access rights to such systems, and are required to keep the information confidential. In addition, all sensitive/credit information you supply is encrypted via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology.
We implement a variety of security measures when a user places an order, enters, submits, or accesses their information to maintain the safety of your personal information.
All transactions are processed through a gateway provider and are not stored or processed on our servers.

This does not include website hosting partners and other parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or serving our users, so long as those parties have agreed to keep this information confidential. We therefore have no responsibility or liability for the content or activities of these linked sites. Nonetheless, we seek to protect the integrity of our site and would thus welcome any feedback you may have about third-party sites.
We use Google AdWords advertising on our website. We receive up to $120,000 per year of free online advertising as a donation from Google through a Google Ad Grant program that is available to nonprofit organizations.

California Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA)
In accordance with CalOPPA, Big Life agrees to the following:

How Big Life Handles Do Not Track (DNT) Signals
We honor Do Not Track (DNT) signals and do not track, plant cookies, or use advertising when a DNT browser mechanism is in place.
Third-Party Behavioral Tracking
Big Life does not allow third-party behavioral tracking.
Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)
When it comes to the collection of personal information from children under the age of thirteen (13) years old, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) puts parents in control. The Federal Trade Commission, United States' consumer protection agency, enforces COPPA, which spells out what operators of websites and online services must do in order to protect children's privacy and safety online. We at Big Life do not specifically market to children under the age of thirteen (13).
Fair Information Practice Principles
The Fair Information Practice Principles form the backbone of privacy law in the United States, and the concepts they include have played a significant role in the development of data protection laws around the globe. Understanding the Fair Information Practice Principles and how they should be implemented is critical to comply with the various privacy laws that protect personal information.
In order to comply with the Fair Information Practice Principles, we will take the following responsive action, should a data breach occur: We will notify users via in-site notification within seven (7) business days.
We also agree to the Individual Redress Principle which requires that individuals have the right to legally pursue enforceable rights against data collectors and processors who fail to adhere to the law. This principle requires not only that individuals have enforceable rights against data users, but also that individuals have recourse to courts or government agencies to investigate and/or prosecute non-compliance by data processors.
The Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act (CAN-SPAM Act) is a law that sets the rules for commercial email, establishes requirements for commercial messages, gives recipients the right to have emails stopped from being sent to them, and spells out tough penalties for violations.
We collect your email address in order to:
- Send information, such as updates on our programs, or respond to inquiries.
- Process orders or donations and send information and updates pertaining to your orders or donations.
- Send additional information related to your purchase and/or donation.
- Market to our mailing list or continue to send emails to our supporters after the original transaction has occurred.
To be in accordance with CAN-SPAM, we agree to the following:
- We do not use false or misleading subject lines or email addresses.
- We identify message as advertisements in some reasonable way, if appropriate.
- We include the physical address of our business or site headquarters.
- We monitor third-party email marketing services for compliance, if used.
- We honor opt-out/unsubscribe requests quickly.
- We allow users to unsubscribe by using a link at the bottom of each email.
We reserve the right to modify or amend this policy at any time and for any reason. However, any changes made to the policy will be posted here on our website within a reasonable time period prior to the effective date of the change.
